An experienced Mechanical Design Engineer will be working as a member of a SATOR engineering team to develop designs for aerospace components. For this reason an interest in defence engineering and development is key to this opportunity.

Your responsibilities will include:

    • identifying design requirements and acceptance;
    • defining the design solution through 3D models, bill of materials data, and supporting documentation;
    • conducting design assurance activities to minimise technical risks, including scoping stress analysis, tolerance stack ups and interface management;
    • capturing design intent in 'design set out' drawings and supporting documentation,
    • preparing information for, and presenting at, design reviews with specialist functions (such as manufacturing, safety) and chief engineers
    • responsibility for time management to ensure work is conducted within agreed timescales and budgets.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

For a R&D aerospace project we are looking to build up the best engineering team. A PhD/Researcher Engineer will be working as a member of a SATOR engineering team to explore and carry out new material and process solutions and structural configurations for space launchers.

Activities

    • Identify strength and stiffness requirements and perform structural analysis to ensure requirements are met with a minimum mass design.
    • Provide a detailed definition of all structural testing required to verify that strength and stiffness requirements are met.
    • Monitor tests and write test assessment reports.
    • Ensure that the design incorporates all features necessary to meet the strength and stiffness requirements.
    • To be conversant with and to apply as appropriate, analysis techniques and methods for light weight structures strength and stiffness prediction that are generally common to aircraft structures analysis. These will include classical hand analysis and computer techniques including the use of the industry standard NASTRAN finite element programme with Patran and other pre and post processing software.
    • Write clear and concise strength summary reports demonstrating adequate strength margins for all significant possible modes of failure. Write other associated analysis documentation.
    • To present strength and stiffness analyses and test requirements and assessments at formal design reviews.
    • Provide design support to manufacture to ensure that strength and stiffness requirements are met for all non-conformances to design with appropriate corrective action.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

PhD, Degree qualified or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering or similar discipline.
Demonstrable experience in performing detailed stress analysis (hand calcs) and FE modelling (Nastran/Patran) for lightweight metallic structures in the aerospace industry.
Preferred:

    • Composites experience;
    • Aircraft design experience
